Most machines, such as cars, trains, or cameras are teleological systems and may even have separate teleological systems inside their own system. It would be ridiculous to believe that these machines were not from intelligent design. We know that these machines have all been designed and created, to serve a certain purpose.

The web design argument claims that in the world of nature, we find many things which are teleological systems. A human heart or a fruiting tree certainly seem to be teleological systems. So we have proved that machines and parts of our natural world, are both teleological systems.

Thus we have come a few steps in our analogy proving that

2. The natural world has parts which resemble machines

Believers in the web design argument claim that since machines and the natural world both have teleological systems, and machines are known to have intelligent design, this proves that the universe must also have intelligent design. Since the universe was not and could not have been created by any human being, the belief in a superhuman being, who intelligently designed at least many parts of the universe, is a reasonable conclusion.

There are many logical arguments against the web design argument. Until the 1800’s and the emergence of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, there was little other natural explanation to compete with the intelligent design theory. The theory of evolution is a natural hypothesis that explained the teleological systems found in our natural world. The theory explains why nature contains so many organisms whose parts are so well suited to their survival. The Darwinian theory claims that animals and plants undergo variations or changes that are inherited by their children. Since some genetic variations provide organisms with an advantage over other organisms, those organisms with the better variations are more likely to survive in greater numbers. Over periods of time different populations of highly developed organisms emerge with parts fitted to their survival.

David Hume, an eighteenth century Scottish philosopher, wrote a book called Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion in which he criticized the Design Argument. Hume notes that not only is the universe so vast, that comparing it to a machine it not proper, but that only our small known part of the universe has order. There may many more parts of this universe which exist in total chaos. He concludes that to observe small natural parts of our part of the universe and thus hypothesize that there must be intelligent design behind the universe is an unreasonable leap. Hume also brings up the point that even if we conclude that our universe was created by intelligent design, that by no means proves that a perfect spiritual God created it. We have no idea of knowing how many times our world has been created, and messed up, or how many other imperfect worlds may exist that this superhuman being (or beings) has created. Thus even if we agree to the hypothesis that certain natural parts of our universe may have been created by intelligent design, this hypothesis in no way proves that this intelligent designer is in anyway perfect, one, or spiritual.

After reading the web design argument, and the arguments against it, I find that the design argument does not prove in anyway that a theistic God exists. I agree with Hume that the universe is far too vast and has far too many unknowns to conclude that the universe resembles a machine. Even small parts of our natural world which theists may say resemble a machine, such as the human body, do not come close to resembling a machine, even if they may contain teleological systems. “Organisms are not designed according to stringent engineering principles where every part has to work exactly in a particular manner and interact with precision with all other parts. Rather, living beings are put together in a rather loose way, with a lot of redundancy and suboptimal design, exactly as one would expect if they were the result of a natural process instead of an intelligent designer.” The design argument fails to realize that many parts of our natural world, which could be called teleological systems, are not perfect, or beautifully designed. “The python’s hind legs-unarticulated bones buried in flesh and totally useless-are indications of quirky and contingent evolution, not divine creation. Similarly, the whale’s flipper-complete with useless humanlike upper arm, forearm, hand and finger bones-is obviously the evolutionary by product of mammalian evolution, not the handiwork of a divine Geppetto.”

Not only do I find the first part of the analogy lacking in substance, but to assume that a theistic God, who is perfect, one, and spiritual, simply because certain natural parts of our world are considered teleological systems is an unsubstantiated leap. Even if one does believe that parts of our natural world resemble machines and thus must have come from intelligent design, we can make no logical conclusion as to who that intelligent web designer is or what role the designer plays in the universe today. It might be many less powerful Gods, or one God who created and designed the world and then forgot about it, or a God who has been creating many worlds trying to get it right. At most the web design argument gives a little weight to theistic belief, but fails to logically prove the existence of God.
